The water scarcity issue affecting the villages of Vizakia, Nikitari, Potami, Ayios Yeorgios, and Kutrafa (Kurtboğan) in the Nicosia (Greek side) district, triggered by the complete drying up of the Vizakia Dam, was brought before the Greek Cypriot House of Representatives’ Agriculture Committee.
Haravgi newspaper, in its report titled “Request for Support to Five Villages in Parliament… ‘We Solved the Water Problem’ Will Remain in History as a Great Anecdote,” stated that members of the Committee sounded “alarm bells” and called on the Greek Cypriot administration for urgent and long-term solutions. According to the report, AKEL MP Hristos Hristofidis, who brought the issue to the attention of the Parliamentary Agriculture Committee, emphasized the large scale of the drought, noting that another region was left without water after Xyliatos, and plants and trees were drying out.
Hristofidis also stated that during the Committee meeting, the government side did not present any new solutions beyond repeating previously taken measures. He warned that if initiatives are not taken to supply drinking and irrigation water, villagers will be forced to abandon the area.
