Under the new law, Italian women seeking surrogacy in countries where it is legal, such as the United States and Canada, could face up to two years in prison and fines of up to €1 million. Those who trade, organize, or advertise embryos or surrogacy will also face imprisonment and fines of €600,000.

UNABLE TO RETURN HOME: The new law, which came into effect in recent months, defines surrogacy as a ‘universal crime.’ According to The Guardian, numerous Italian couples who have become parents through surrogacy in the US and Canada are unable to return home. These couples are facing imprisonment, being categorized alongside terrorists and abusers.
