Nigerian National and Local Arrested in Nicosia Drug Bust, Investigation Ongoing
A Nigerian national, C.V.J. (E-39), and a Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) citizen, K.T. (E-22), were brought before the court again after being apprehended with one kilogram of cannabis-type drugs during an operation in Nicosia conducted by the Anti-Narcotics and Smuggling Directorate and the Crime Prevention Branch. They were granted an additional 7 days for investigation. During the hearing, it was revealed that authorities are searching for two individuals who allegedly provided the location for the drugs to be collected. It was also disclosed that C.V.J. has been residing illegally in the country since April 5, 2021.
A police officer from the Narcotics Branch stated that the operation took place on September 24, 2025, around 8:30 PM in the Küçük Kaymaklı area. According to the police, C.V.J. attempted to flee upon seeing the officers, who were from the Anti-Narcotics and Smuggling Directorate and the Nicosia Police Department’s Crime Prevention Branch, but was apprehended shortly after. The police also stated that the black bag dropped by the suspect during his escape was found and taken as evidence. Upon inspection, the bag contained a substance believed to be one kilogram of cannabis, which was seized as evidence. Furthermore, approximately 1.5 grams of additional drugs were found in a bag belonging to the suspect K.T.
Police reported that K.T. claimed to have received the drugs from C.V.J. C.V.J., in his statement, claimed that he and K.T. went to the vicinity of the Nicosia Bus Terminal and received the drugs from a location sent to him. However, police stated that the review of camera footage indicated that the suspects’ statements regarding the location were inaccurate.
The police stated that the investigation is ongoing, and they are awaiting reports related to the evidence sent for analysis and fingerprint examination. They also reiterated that C.V.J. has been residing illegally in the country since April 5, 2021. The police added that the examination of the suspects’ mobile phones is continuing and requested an additional 5 days of detention, which the court granted.
